Passive exposure to nicotine from e-cigarettes
2016
A procedure based on the use of ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), after liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME), has been successfully employed for the determination of passive exposure to nicotine from cigarette and e-cigarette smoking. Nicotine has been determined in exhaled breath and oral fluids of both, active and passive smokers. The aforementioned studies, made in closed environments, evidenced that the exhaled breath after conventional blend cigarette smoke provides nicotine levels of the order of 220 ng per puff, in the case of experienced smokers, being exhaled only 32 ng in the case of e-cigarettes. On the other hand, the nicotine amount in oral fluids of passive vapers was between 8…
Acetone measurements in the exhaled air by the cavity ring-down spectrometry
2020
Our work is focused to develop sensitive optical diagnostic methods for the detection of Volatile Organic Compounds in the breath. For the breath measurements, we have built a cavity ring-down spectrometer, operated in the UV region. The system was tested and calibrated using a KinTek automated permeation tube system with nitrogen as a carrier gas, as well as self- prepared acetone mixtures in air with known concentrations. In this paper, we present results of the measurements of acetone concentration in the breath for the test group of randomly selected 40 people in the age group over 50. We observed the values of acetone concentration in the breath in the range from 0,1 – 80 ppm, with a m…
Wearable sensor for real-time monitoring of hydrogen peroxide in simulated breath
First results of cavity ring down signals from exhaled air
2017
In this paper we report first results from the developed cavity ring-down spectrometer for application in human breath analysis for the diagnostics of diabetes and later for early detection of lung cancer. Our cavity ring-down spectrometer works in UV region with pulsed Nd:YAG laser at 266 nm wavelength. First experiments allow us to determine acetone and benzene at the level bellow ppm. In our experiment, first results from breath samples from volunteers after doing different activities were collected and examined. Influence of the smoking on the breath signals also was examined.

Breathprinting in childhood asthma
2018
The two major challenges facing researchers and clinicians in finding an objective test for asthma are: (i) there is no clear gold standard test, and (ii) there is no current method to accurately measure both the airway obstruction and the airway inflammatory components of asthma. Looking forward, we need to re-evaluate our understanding of existing tests to see how to bridge the gap between “test” and “treatment,” and explore new methodologies, especially for detecting airway inflammation. The development and validation of noninvasive biomarkers for asthma diagnosis and treatment is an expanding field of research. In this context, breathomics is considered particularly appealing in view of…
